Honey bee tours:

This is for inquisitive visitors who want to learn about honey bees and beekeeping.  Best suited for visitors between 6th grade to adult.  Tours can be adjusted for younger children so please let us know the age we will be speaking to.   

  •  During one of our tours we will build a honey bee hive
  •  Try on a beekeepers suit
  •  Walk out to our apiary and see working bee hives
  •  Visit our observation hive and see bees making honey behind glass

Beekeeping tours take 2 hours during which time we discuss:

  • why bees are important to our environment with a compare and contrast of the jobs of honeybees, bumblebees, and other pollinators vs. yellow jackets, hornets and wasps.
  • why bees sting and what an individual can do to minimize the chances of getting stung
  • Types of bee hives both in nature and man made
  • why we "keep" honeybees
  • who are the members of a honeybee colony and what are their jobs
  • how is honey extracted from a honey bee hive
  • What are some of the challenges honey bees face today

Cost:  $10. per person with a $100. minimum for a tour.

Pollinator tours:
This tour focuses not only on honey bees but on all the pollinators.  Learn about the hundreds of fuzzy friends that flit from plant to plant.  We'll discuss honeybees, native bees, butterflies, and bats!  Participants can make a native pollinator house and go on an entomolgy hike through our farm.
cost:  $10. per person with a $100. minimum for a tour.  This tour also takes about 2 hours.

 

Bee Camp For Adults:

For most people the above tour is as far as they ever need to venture into beekeeping.  However, if you are one of those individuals that is looking for more you may which to participate in our Bee CampBee camp is all about fun and in depth learning.  Salt Air Farm will help you build, set-up, and maintain your own beehive for a season.  Along the way you will learn all about honey bees and honey production.  You will get to watch your colony grow and extract and bottle your own honey. Everything you need to be a beekeeper for a season is included. 

Cost of bee camp:  $500. per hive.  Couples are welcome to share a hive.  Bee Camp meets one evening a month from March - August.  Registration for bee camp takes place between September and December for the following beekeeping season.
